For more than 100 years... . . . Monhegan Island has been a summer haven for artists and other visitors who appreciate its isolation, the beauty of its wilderness area, its quiet relaxed atmosphere and unhurried pace. Located ten miles off the coast of Maine, it is accessible only by boat, and there are no cars or paved roads on the island. In September the light is especially lovely and the fall foliage is striking against the clear blue of the Atlantic. Most of this small island is wild land with trails for hiking. There are breathtaking views from 400 foot cliffs, and during the fall migration Monhegan is a stopping point for many unusual birds. On the ferry ride out often whales, eagles, and seals can be spotted. Monhegan is a remote location, and because of this we request that participants be in good health. There is no official emergency rescue service on the island, and there is a 16-hour period between the last ferry in the evening and the first ferry the next morning. Our schedule will include ample free time in the afternoons for enjoying the many activities available on the island: Hiking through the woods to some of the highest cliffs on the Atlantic Ocean, purusing the island art galleries and shops, exploring the lighthouse and the Monhegan Historical and Cultural Museum, picnicking on a sunbaked bluff while watching the surf crash on the rugged ocean side of the island, napping on the lawn, reading, more knitting, and relaxing, relaxing, relaxing! See Monhegan Island and Monhegan House Our base will be Monhegan House, a comfortable and charming guesthouse that first opened in 1870. All rooms are simply furnished with antiques and offer views of the ocean, the lighthouse and meadow or both. There are shared baths on the second floor. Breakfast and lunch included. Getting to Monhegan Island Monhegan Island is located 10 miles off the coast of Maine and is accessible only by boat. No cars are allowed on the island. We will be departing from Port Clyde. Participants may either arrange their own transportation or sign-up for the optional transportation arrangements as detailed below. Port Clyde is approximately a 1-1/2 hour drive from Portland. Optional: Transportation via charter service from Portland, Maine to Port Clyde, round-trip ferry, and return trip to Portland at the conclusion of the trip. This optional service is limited to 20 people. There will be one convenient pick-up point at the Portland jetport. Contact us for details or clarification. Ferry transportation to Monhegan is included in the retreat. All participants must arrive at Monhegan Boat Line in Port Clyde by 2:15 pm, in order to catch the 3:00 pm boat to Monhegan. This is the last boat of the day, so be sure to arrive at 2:15 to allow time for parking, and ticket pick up. Subscribe to our email list! |
